James Marion Rooker is the son of John Bunyan Rooker (1809-1858) and Nancy Ann McCallum (1814-1906). He married Mary Anne Hill (1843-1922) on 28 January 1858 in Smith, Mississippi. Together they have 14 known children.

James served as Sgt. in Company G, 46th Mississippi Infantry, Confederate States Army, and was for a while Prisoner of War.
