Mahlon Best was living in Hoysville, northern Loudoun Country, Va., at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was a member of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Lovettsville. On or about June 20, 1862, he enlisted in the Independent Loudoun (Virginia) Rangers, the only organized military unit from present-day Virginia to fight for the Union. He remained in service until the end of the war, being mustered out on May 31, 1865.

Following the Civil War, Mahlon lived in Lawrence KS, Coles County IL, and Bay City MI before his final move back to DC in 1875.
