Residence Stewart County GA.

Enlisted on 8/15/1861, he was elected 1st Lieutenant that same day and mustered into Company I, 17th Georgia Infantry on 8/29/1861.

Listed as Acting Adjutant on Jan & Feb 1863 Roll.

Fatally Wounded In Action, gunshot in right shoulder and lungs, 6/2/1863 in the Battle of Gettysburg, PA; discharged for disability (date not stated).

On 1/31/1893, his widow applied for a Confederate Soldier Widow Pension; in it she stated James died of the long term effects of his wound. (GA Archives record # 187875-00023.)


The 17th Infantry Regiment was organized in Stewart County, Georgia, during the summer of 1861. Its members were from Columbus and Decatur, and the counties of Webster, Schley, Harris, and Stewart.
