Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning, Dec. 26, at 10:30 a.m. for John A. Ermels, 60, who passed away at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 22, of an apparent heart attack. The Rev. Dennis Carroll, pastor of the Niobrara-Lindy Lutheran Churches, conducted the services here at St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Scott Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Bloomfield Cemetery. Casket Bearers were Clyde D. Newton, Lawrence Schneider, Dennis Wilken, Gary Ermels, Lee Rose and Wayne Ehlers.
John Albert Ermels, son of John and Dora Koertje Ermels, was born on August 8, 1910, at Bloomfield, Nebraska, where his parents were engaged in farming. He attended rural and parochial school in the Bloomfield Community.
He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in 1924 at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield. Later he joined St. Mark's Lutheran Church.
On June 29, 1936 he was united in marriage with Helen Kolessa. To this union one daughter and one son were born. Helen passed away in 1944.
He was later united in marriage with Magdalena Klein Schuett on January 4, 1948. They lived on a farm north of town with his two children and a step-daughter. In 1961 they moved to Bloomfield where he was engaged in custom work. Magdalena passed away suddenly in March of 1969.
John Ermels passed away on December 22, 1970, at the age of 60 years, 4 months, and 14 days of a heart attack, although he had been in failing health the past several years. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first and second wives.
He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Don (Shirley) Schulz, and a son, Richard Ermels, both of Bloomfield, Nebraska, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Gary (Arlene) Halleen of Cottage Grove, Minnesota; five brothers and five sisters, Mrs. Albert (Anna) Altieri of Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. Henry (Emma) Jensen of Crofton, Nebr., Mrs. George (Minnie) Schole of Busby, Alberta, Canada, Henry Ermels of Yankton, S.D., William Ermels of Crofton, Nebr., Mrs. Marie Joachimsen of Norfolk, Nebr., Joe Ermels of Norwalk, Calif., Edwin Ermels of Wausa, Nebr., Albert Ermels of Bloomfield, Nebr. and Mrs. Ray (Lousie) Wilken of Bloomfield.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
