Lewis Smith, killed when car skids into collision, Route 6
Lewis J. Smith, 57, Waymart RD 1, was killed Friday afternoon, Dec. 17, 1976, at 4:40 in a two-car crash on Route 6 between Waymart and Steene.
Mr. Smith was pronounced dead on arrival at Wayne County Memorial Hospital. Wayne County Chief Coroner Robert F. Jennings said death resulted from multiple internal injuries.
Canaan Township Chief William Gillette said the cars were a 1971 Chevrolet sedan operated by the victim's wife, Mrs. Beaulah Smith, and a 1972 Volvo driven by Louis Klitman, 36, Baltimore, Md. Gillette was assisted at the scene by Pennsylvania State Police.
Police said KIitman was eastbound on Route 6 and told officers his Volvo hit a patch of ice. The vehicle skidded out of control and slid sideways down the highway before colliding with the Chevrolet. Mr. Smith was seated in the back seat behind his wife.
Seriously injured in the crash was Mrs. Beulah Eltz, who was trapped in the vehicle between the seat and steering wheel before being extricated by personnel using Jim's American Station wrecker. Others injured were the victim's daughter, Mrs. Nancy Tallman, 25, Waymart RD 1, her two sons, Wade, three and Brian, one; also a fifth passenger, Willis H. Kagler, Waymart RD 1; and Klitman, the lone occupant of the second car. All were taken to Wayne County Memorial Hospital and admitted: Mrs. Tallman and her two sons have been discharged. Mrs. Smith and Kagler were listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit Monday morning, and Klitman was reported in fair condition.
Chief Gillette said Cottage Hose Company was called to the scene but was not needed. Damage was estimated at $3,000 to both vehicles.

Lewis J. Smith was born in Waymart, a son of the late Sherman and Rose Stanton Smith.
He was employed by the Agway Co., Honesdale. He was a graduate of Waymart High School and was a member and deacon of South Clinton Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife, the former Beulah Eltz; two daughters, Mrs. Elmer (Arlene) Bender, Waymart, and Mrs. Paul (Nancy) Tallman, Waymart RD 1; two sons, Gene, Carbondale, and Ronald, Waymart RD 1; A sister, Mrs. Albert (Lulu) Snyder, Waymart; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday from Herbert E. Jenkins Funeral Home, 269 Belmont street, Waymart, with services by the Rev. Russell A. Edwards, Waymart and South Clinton Baptist Churches. Interment, Canaan Corners cemetery.
Friends may call Monday, 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to South Clinton Baptist Church.
