One-time tennis star driver in road death Jane(Peaches) Bartkowicz, the pride of Hamtramck in the 1960's for winning numerous national junior tennis titles, may face a manslaughter charge for allegeded drunk driving accident, Warren police said Thursday. Police said they will seek a manslaughter warrent today from Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Bartkowicz,33 who now lives in Mt. Clemens, was chared with drunk driving eariler this week. Lt. John Welch said 37th District Judge George Montgomery dismissed the drunk driving charge when police indicated they wanted to seek a warrent for a more serious charge. John Skrzypinski, Detriot, 60, was struck by a car driven by Bartkowicz Monday at 1 a.m. on M-97 at Schoenherr Road in Warren. He said Skrzypinski was putting gasoline in a car for two Sterling Heights women, Lisa Jablonski, 19, and Carolyn Henderson, 21, "He was doing a good deed," Welch said. "The two ladies were standing with him when the northbound auto failed to stop and pinned parts of all three pedestrians between the bumpers ( of both cars)." Jablonski suffered leg injuries and was taken to Bi-County Hosptial in Warren with Skrzypinski, who died 12 hours later, Henderson was taken to Harper Hosptial with head injuries. Bartkowicz was with her nine-year -old son, Kevin, and neither reported any injury, police said. Jablonski's car was in the left through lane withits warning lights flashing, Welch said, adding there were 55 feet of skid marks before Bartkowicz's car hit. Skrzypinski a watchman at Speedway Auto Sales saw the disabled vehicle while on duty.
The name of Peaches Bartkowicz filled the sports pages newspapers across the county in the 1960's during her meteoric rise in the world of tennis. Bartkowicz won 17 junior single and doble titles between 1960 and 1967, according to the United States Tennis Assoiction. She won the Wimbledon Junior singles title in England in 1967 and was ranked one of the top U.S. women tennis players for several years, ranking as high as fourth in 1967 and 1969.
