J.E. Taylor Obituary
After a valiant struggle with congestive heart failure, James Eugene Taylor, 86, formerly of Billings, (Montana) died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, June 4, 2006, at the Veteran Administration's hospice care unit in Vancouver (Washington). Born July 1, 1919, in Kinsley, Kan., to Edward M. and Amy Hildenbrand Taylor, Jim married Addie Crocker on Aug. 16, 1937, in Great Bend, Kan. In 1939, the young couple lost their first child in infancy.
During World War II, Jim served in the Military Intelligence Section of General MacArthur's headquarters. His tour of duty stretched from Australia to the Philippines and finally to occupied Japan, where he attained the rank of Sergeant Major before his discharge in 1946.
In 1951, he moved his wife and three children from Kinsley to Billings, where he worked as a landman for Amerada Petroleum. A few years later, Jim became an independent oil lease broker, forming his own company under the name of Jetco.
Following his divorce in 1965, Jim married Jan Peters Jones on Feb. 27, 1966, in Powell, Wyo., adopting her three children and converting to Catholicism. For the next 20 years, Jim continued in oil exploration before becoming a health and life insurance agent in the late '80s. In 2002, he and his wife moved to Portland, Ore.
Jim was a charter and life member of the Montana Landman's Association and member of the Billings Petroleum Club for over 40 years. His oil painting hobby in the 1960s landed him a one-man show of his works at the Montana Historical Society in Helena. He fished the rivers, streams and lakes of Montana, as well as the Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Sea of Cortez.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Louis; and two children from his first marriage, Dee Ann and Michael. Surviving him are his widow Jan Taylor, of Beaverton, Oregon; two children from his first marriage, Pamela Taylor Johnson Zemla (Edward) of Whittier, Calif., and Eric Taylor (Cass) of Seattle; his adopted children, Alan Taylor of Duluth, Minn., Ross Taylor (Cathy) of St. Helens, Ore., and Kim Taylor Dunn (Steve) of Spokane, Wash.; his sister Mary Irene Ray of Las Cruces, N.M., brothers Dean Taylor (Betty) of Hutchinson, Kan., and Ted Taylor (Dolores) of Kinsley, Kan.; 16 grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
