Ellen Conaughton was born in 1828 in Kinvarra, Galway, Ireland to Laurence Connaughton and Mary Quinn. She married Clare native, Patrick Leonard, in Galway when she was 18. Together they had two sons, Patrick Jr. and John, and three daughters, Mary, Margaret and Ellen. Ellen moved from Ireland to New York, to Idaho, to Nebraska and finally Fort Leavenworth during her Husband’s service with the United States Army. She died on February 24, 1890, in Leavenworth, Kansas, at the age of 62.
