Frederick was born in Rueth Germany to Christian Heinrich and Maria Regina Pernert Brendel. He came to America in 1855 along with his father and sister, Anna who later married John Drolman (Trollman). Other sisters were Hannah Sick, Fredericka Ide, Henrietta Bachman, and Christina Loose.

Although he was not afforded a formal education, Frederick learned by working industriously at any position he was able to secure. Livery stable, butcher shops and farming.

In 1869 Frederick married Mary Jane Hurford, in Independence Township. They maintained their farm in section 17 of White Lake Township, Oakland County, and raised their large family.
