Decorations: Order of the Purple Heart awarded posthumously; also, will receive Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal. Member of Congregational Church. Active Mason and member of Demolay. Died October 22, 1942, Guadalcanal.

---Pfc. Jack S. Wood, who enlisted with the U.S. Marines last February, has been killed in action in the south Pacific area, the war department has notified his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Wood, 808 D Street.
---The parents received a telegram at 4 o'clock Friday afternoon from T. Holcomb, lieutenant-general of the U.S. marines, reading, "Deeply regret to advise you that your son, Pfc. Jack S. Wood of the U.S. marines was killed in action in performance of his duty and in the service of his country. Letter will follow."
---Wood finished his marine training at San Diego in June. He sailed from this country for foreign service in July.
---Private First Class Wood was graduated from the Rock Springs high school and before his enlistment was employed by the local post office. Friends in the city were saddened by the news of his death, and expressions of sympathy were extended to the bereaved family. Another son, Captain Clayton Wood, is also stationed with the U.S. armed forces on one of the global battlefronts.

---The young man will be remembered as a son of Mr. Jay C. Wood, now residing in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He enlisted in the Marines February 1, 1942.
---Jay C. Wood was born and reared in La Plata, later moving to Macon where he married Mary Shouse and then they moved to Rock Springs, Wyoming.
---The Woods family is outstanding in the service of our country, Cyrus C. Wood, the grandfather of the boy killed in action, fought in the Civil war, an uncle, Clayton C. Wood, served his country in the Spanish-American War, both Cyrus C. Wood and Clayton Woods are buried in the La Plata Cemetery.
---Jack has a brother Clayton Wood in the foreign service. Another grandson of Cyrus C. Wood, Chris Maffry, Jr., is now in the Air service, having graduated form West Point last June.
