Harold Albert Apel, 89, Lincoln, passed away at 1:10 a.m. Monday (April 27, 2009) at the Christian Nursing Home, Lincoln.

Harold was born March 16, 1920, in Atlanta, son of Albert Henry and Anna Marie Schrauf Apel. He married Rosemary LaForge on Dec. 23, 1945, at the First United Methodist Church, Lincoln.

Surviving are his wife, Rosemary, Lincoln; son, Gary (Mary) Apel, Bourbonnais; son, Gene Apel, Lincoln; daughter, Gail (David) Apel-Sasse, Beason; son, Garret (Jill) Apel, Beason; grandchildren, Nathan Sasse, Chestnut; Abrigail (Doug) Sasse-Temple, Fulton; and Kristine Apel, Beason; step-grandchildren, Chad (Deb) Blake, Bourbonnais, and Eric ( Peggy) Blake, Bourbonnais; three stepgreat-grandchildren; sister-in law, Catherine Apel, Atlanta; cousin, Esther Horn, Mount Pulaski; one niece and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Vernon Apel.

Mr. Apel was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school as well as an elder at Zion Lutheran Church in Lincoln. He was then a charter member of Faith Lutheran Church in Lincoln and served as chairman of the elders.

He graduated from Bluegrass Grade School in Atlanta, and went on to attend Lawndale High School.

He was a member of rural youth where he met his wife. He was a lifelong farmer in Logan County, farming for 50 years before retiring in 1988.

He was a lifelong member of the Logan County Farm Bureau, former president and treasurer of C.R.O.P. and a member for 60 years, co-leader of Cloverdale 4-H Club, president and nine-year board member of East Lincoln Farmers Grain Co., president of the local Thrivent (AAL) chapter, past president and nine-year board member of the Federal Land Bank Board, member of the Lawndale school board and president of Chester East Lincoln school board.
