Dr. Wilfred Gus Sager walked rejoicing into the healing embrace of Jesus on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. His spirit and heart live on in all who loved him and all whose lives were enriched by his passion, enthusiasm and ministry.
Funeral: 12:30 p.m. Friday at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Chapel. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home.
Memorials: May be made to Sanctus Ministries or Abiding Peace Community Church.
Born Dec. 21, 1929, in Taylor, Wilfred was the eldest son of Reverend Gus and Estella Sager. He was a proud alumnus of Bartlett High School and Texas Lutheran College, where he met and married Majorie Krieg. A graduate of Wartburg Seminary and Princeton Seminary, Wilfred was ordained at Zion Lutheran Church in Fredericksburg where his dad was pastor. Thus he picked up the mantle of his great-grandfather, Christoph Adam Sager, a Lutheran missionary to Texas.
Wilfred began tending Christ's flock by establishing Abiding Savior Lutheran Church in Corpus Christi. While associate pastor at St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin, he designed the stained glass theology for the new sanctuary.
A former Luther League International president, Wilfred answered the Holy Spirit's call to youth ministry as regional youth director in Dallas and then in Sioux Falls, S.D. He earned his doctorate in educational psychology from the University of South Dakota before becoming associate pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minn. He helped organize the Center for Effective Living before returning to Texas as pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Arlington.
Wilfred served the Lord in his second career as therapist in Minnesota with Lutheran Social Services and the Center for Christian Psychological Services. He married Addy Nelson in 1992, and teamed with her to lead more than 500 couples to deeper oneness with God through the Sanctus Marriage Enrichment Ministries program he developed. He saw Sanctus Ministries as the culmination of his life's work.
"His Master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant...enter into the joy of your Master.'" Matthew 25:21
His eyes lit up with pride at the accomplishments of his children. Son John, an artist on staff at the Blanton Museum of Art, and his wife Joni live in Austin. Daughter Tesha is a diagnostician for the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD. Son Nathan is a Lutheran pastor in Virginia, Minn., and he and his wife Rita Rae blessed Wilfred with three grandchildren, Noah and his wife, Monique, Hannah and her husband, Will, and Isaac. Other survivors include his wife, Addy; brother, Alan and his wife, Erline Sager; and sister, Eileen and her husband, Earl Eliason. His stepfamily brought him much happiness: daughter, Susan and Jim Wilhelm; son, Steven and Elsa Nelson; daughter, Sherry and Andy Freilinger; daughter, Stacie and Jim Fisher; daughter, Shelley and Adrian Brooks; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
