Leland Gerhard Anderson went to the arms of his Heavenly Father on April 2, 2009. Leland was born October 17, 1924 in Vermont Township, Dane County, Wisconsin, to Elvin Oscar and Lillian (Baumgartner) Anderson. On September 7, 1946 he married the love of his life, Marjorie Arnaiz. They remained steadfast in their love for each other for 62 years. They welcomed into their live four daughters, Monica Benben (Daniel) of Plano, Texas, Paula Anderson (Leland) of Hastings, Minnesota, Evelyn (Kathy) Owen (Mike) of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Melanie Danford (Tim) of Arlington, Texas. His daughters gave him 7 grandchildren and they in turn presented him with 15 great grandchildren. All love him very much. He was extremely proud of each one of them. They gave him great joy. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Andrew Anderson and Harold Anderson and one sister Dorothy Tupper. He has two surviving sisters Joyce Pruitt of Wisconsin and Gladys Ripley of California.
Leland attended school in Black Earth, Wisconsin. He graduated in June 1942. He had earned a scholarship to the university. He chose instead to join the Marine Corps on July 18, 1942. He served as a radioman/gunner during World War ll. He flew dive bombing missions in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Air Medal with Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was discharged after the war. He was called back to serve his country proudly in 1951 for the Korean Conflict. He served until he retired November 30, 1968. Leland started his career in the Marines as a PVT. He retired with the rank of Major. For 14 Years he worked in Naval ship design in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
He and Marjorie retired to Mountain Home in 1987. They are members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. A Memorial Service will be at Holy Cross Lutheran Church at 11:00 AM Saturday with Reverend Larry Olson, officiating. Interment with Military Honors will be at Baxter Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hospice of the Ozarks or Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
