Mr. Sheridan died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at his home.
He was born Feb. 10, 1918, in Emporia, the son of Bert and Olive (Davis) Sheridan. He served for four years as a communications officer on the USS Kretchmer in World War II. He then completed a master's degree from Kansas University and a doctoral degree from the London School of Economics.
Mr. Sheridan taught in the economics department at KU from 1952 to 1988. He dedicated his academic career to the study of slavery in the Caribbean. He spent his retirement years studying and writing about Kansas history with an emphasis on the Underground Railroad in Douglas County.
Mr. Sheridan's books include "Sugar and Slavery," "Doctors and Slaves," and "Freedom's Crucible," along with numerous journal articles. He received a Fullbright scholarship in 1962, and a Festschrift in 1996. He also was a member of the Royal Historical Society.
He married Audrey Porter on Oct. 18, 1952, in Emporia. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Richard D., Chico, Calif.; and a daughter, Margaret Sheridan, Sacramento, Calif.
