Omer Knoop, 101, of Gardner, KS, passed away December 26, 2008 at St. John's Hospital, Leavenworth, KS. Funeral Services will be 11:00 am, Monday, December 29, 2008, at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner, 913-856-7111, with burial at Scott Valley Cemetery, Richland Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gardner Senior Citizen's Center. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am before the service at the funeral home. Omer was born April 11, 1907 in Richland Township, Miami County, KS to Frank Melvin and Ella Mae Attebery Knoop. He was the oldest of five children and attended the one-room schoolhouse through 9th grade. He graded roads for Miami County with a caterpillar tractor for six years, worked on pipelines in oil fields between Edgerton and Waverly, and was a lifelong farmer. He married Vermel "Tillie" Tillery on March 29, 1932 in Harrisonville, MO. They were married for 69 years. He retired in 1977 from farming in Miami County and moved to Gardner. Omer was a member of Bethel Baptist Church, the Richland School Board, Cemetery Board, and a card club. He was a 4-H leader. Omer was active with the Gardner Senior Citizen's Center, eating lunch each day, and playing cards. Omer was awarded the Centurian Award at Gardner's 150th Celebration. When asked why he has lived so long, he responded, "I have no idea…I just went along and lived!" Omer will be dearly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vermel in 2001, a baby daughter, Karen Sue, and siblings Virginia Sullivan, Clifford, and Glendal. Omer is survived by his daughter Omera Jo Brown and Allen of Paola; four grandchildren Rodney Brown, Deana Howard, Kristi Brown and Lori Enman; and seven great grandchildren; and his sister Mildred Whitney of Baldwin City.
