John Wynn Cox is the son of George Wynn Cox and Mary Reeder Fruit-Cox.

John and his wife Louinda Cox were the parents of nine children, his obituary includes eight, they had another son Edward who died at a young age.

John W. Cox was born in Dewitt county, Illinois, July 30, 1840, and died in Joseph March 28, 1928, being at the time of his death in his 88th year. In September of 1861 he was married to Louinda Murphy. To this union there were born eight children, seven of whom survive. Their names and residences are as follows: Charles N., La Cygne, Kansas; I. Elmer and Richard B., Salt Lake; John E., Joseph; Mrs. W.P. Hambelton, Enterprise; Mrs. Ada Reeves, Marysville, Kansas, and Mrs. H.A. Swarts, Salt Lake. There also survive 24 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

The mother of these children having passed away May 27, 1900, in June of 1901, Mr. Cox was married to Josephine Hymen, who survives him.

In 1883 the family moved to Linn county, Kansas, where Mr. and Mrs. Cox lived until 1920, when they came to Joseph, as the children had left the home place and come west.

In early life he united with the Desciples church, but in about the year 1894 he espoused the Seventh Day Adventist faith, in which he lived until the time of his decease.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Methodist church at Joseph and were conducted by Rev. H.W. Oliver, assisted by Rev. E.F. Clower, the pastor of the church and burial was in the Prairie Creek cemetery. One son came from a distance for the funeral, Richard B. Cox, of Salt Lake City, Utah.
