Glen Ray Volquardsen was born Sept. 28, 1937, at Venus, the 13th of 15 children born to John B. and Mary (Belka) Volquardsen. He grew up on the family farm, attended rural School District 45 and Verdigre High School, graduating with the class of 1956. Glen enlisted in the O'Neill unit of the Army National Guard in 1958, served six years and was honorably discharged in 1964, attaining the rank of sergeant E5.

He was baptized on Sept. 24, 1961, at First Methodist Church in Verdigre and was confirmed on Aug. 2, 1981, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Orchard.

On Oct. 15, 1961, he was united in marriage to Gloria K. Cernousek at First Methodist Church in Verdigre. The couple made their home in Verdigre for several years where he was employed by the Farmer's Union Co-op Association and Milton G. Waldbaum Co. as a route hauler.

They moved to Orchard in 1964, and for the majority of his working years he was employed by Voorhies Milk Route, Orchard Dairy Products and Mid Am Dairy as a contract milk hauler and plant employee.

Glen thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter until his health declined. His pride and joy were his four grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria of Orchard; three sons, Gregory and wife Marchel of Creighton, Gailen of Leigh and Grant and wife Amy of Logan, Ohio; grandchildren Russell, Ryan, Randi and Makenna Volquardsen; six sisters, Bertha Boelter of Bristow, Myrtle Podany of Verdigre, Gladys Gleason and her husband, Jim of Sun City, Ariz., Eleanor Bruce of Lincoln, Grace Pavlik of Verdigre and Helen Branigan of Omaha; sister- in-law Iola Volquardsen of Battle Creek; and 37 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marie Phelps; five brothers, Johnnie, Carl, Gordon, Bernard and Donald; and a brother, Dale, and sister, Rosemary, in infancy.
