Artist. As a sculptor of bronze and marble statues and monuments, he was acclaimed for his designs of the late 19th and early 20th Century. Having a natural ability for sculpture, he received his first important commission for the bronze statue “The Minuteman” dedicated in 1875, to commemorate the Battle of Concord of 100 years earlier. In the next intervening 50 years he created a vast number of works on American subjects such as statues of General Ulysses S. Grant (1899), George Washington (1900), Alma Mater (1903), Ralph Emerson (1914) and many more. French is most noted for his marble statue of President Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., dedicated in 1922. He continued to work and teach until his death at age 81. In 1955, his studio was opened to the public as a museum and became a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1968.
