Veryl G. Johnson, 83, a resident of 712 9th Ave., Charles City, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 15, 2000, at the Ninth Street Chautauqua Guest Home.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City. The Rev. Dianne Christopher, senior pastor, officiated. Burial was at 1:30 p.m. in the Alcock Cemetery in rural Fredrika.
Veryl Glen Johnson was born June 19, 1916 in Chickasaw County, the son of John and Clara (Pike) Johson. He received his education in the rural Chickasaw County schools and on Sept. 21, 1939, he and Jean Arminta Cheever were married at Waverly. He farmed, worked at the Oliver Corp., and was an animal caretaker for the Salsbury Laboratories for 20 years.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the Moose Lodge, the Royal Neighbors at Bassett, and was a part of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He loved farming, fishing, and helping people.
Living family members include his wife, Jean of Charles City; a son, Steve and his wife, Kathie Johnson of Houston, Texas; two daughters and their husbands, Veryla and Charley Brewer of Bella Vista, AR, and Sharon and Jim Zenor of Ames; six grandchildren: Don and Mark DeWalle, Chad and Kelly Johnson, Mike Zenor, and Jackie Lund; three step great-grandchildren: Wes, Gabe, and Jay Jimenez; two brothers, Everett Johnson of Waterloo and Laurence Johnson of Janesville; and a sister, Patricia Zubak of Cedar Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Audrey in her youth.
