She spent much of her fortune on restoring the castle and its estate, employing many of the leading architects and craftsmen of the day. She became renowned as a society hostess, holding weekend parties at the castle with a guest list that included the Prince of Wales and Mrs Simpson, Charlie Chaplin, Errol Flynn and Ian Fleming. In the 1950s her health began to fail and she needed the support of a resident nurse.
