Evelyn L. (Shaw) Alvis, 79, died Apr. 2 at her home in Woodbine.

Evelyn was born Sept. 14, 1929 to Francis and Hazel (Platt) Shaw near Marcus. She worked at Pix Theater and the adjoining cafe under Bill Bolt from eighth grade through 12th grade and graduated in 1947. She then went to summer school in Denison. She taught two semesters of country school. January 8, 1949, she married Jim Alvis. After the couple got married she stayed at home to care for their children. When Evelyn was a senior in high school, she started working for Dr. J. Hinze, then Crusader Bus Lines for two years, Countryside Timekeeper and then Energique. In 1994 she began working for Fouts Funeral Home and worked there until 2006.

Evelyn was a member of the First Christian Church. She was active in the choir and served as a deaconess at the church. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, card club, dance club, and she sang with the Noteables. Evelyn enjoyed dancing, music, crossword puzzles and going to the casino.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband James (Dec. 19, 1994); two grandchildren, Jennifer Alvis Jochims and Bennett Alvis; sisters, Betty Boustead, Gloria Forker, Viola Siebels; and one brother, Jimmy Shaw.

Survivors include: her seven children, Mike and his wife, Judy, Alvis, Woodbine; Dennis and his wife, Connie, Alvis, Logan; David and his wife, Carol, Alvis, Keosauqua; Mary and her husband, Mike, Clausen, Yankton, S.D.; Tim and his wife, Jodie, Alvis, Stromsburg, Neb.; Donn "Dink" and his wife, Kathy, Alvis, Woodbine and Anna and her husband, Chad, Rivedal, Omaha; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Francis and his wife, Betty, Shaw, Pleasanton, Calif., and Donald and his wife, Peni, Shaw, Woodbine; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Apr. 6 at the First Christian Church, Woodbine, Rev. Ron Keith, officiant. Musicians were Bob Smith and her grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were: Vicki Stamm, Alesha Alvis, Erika Alvis, Becky Alvis, Tina Clausen, Kyla Brockevelt, Jackie Alvis, Sami Alvis, Lexie Alvis, and Alaina Allen.

Pallbearers were: Bret Alvis, Nathanial Alvis, Andy Alvis, Aaron Clausen, Dominic Alvis, and Jacob Jochims.

Interment was in the Woodbine Cemetery.

Fouts Funeral Home, Woodbine, was in charge of arrangements.

WOODBINE -- Miss Evelyn Shaw and James Alvis were married January 18, 1949, at the Presbyterian parsonage by the Rev. Henry Kruse. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Alvis. Mr. and Mrs. Merlyn Woodward were their attendants. The bridegroom is employed with George Barry. His bride has been teaching.
