Born in Fuerstenwalde Spree, near Berlin, Germany, to Albert Burgdorf and Wilhelmine Blumer, Rev. Paul C. E. Burgdorf, Ph.D., arrived in New York in December 1904 on the ship "Blucher." He may first have served the New York Synod of the Lutheran Church. It was in New York that he met his wife-to-be, Hermance Rottman. On 1 Oct 1912, they married in Baltimore. He served as pastor of Jerusalem Ev. Luth. Church on Belair Rd., Baltimore, from 1912 to his death.

Rev. Burgdorf's installation was recorded in the Proceedings of the Annual Convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Maryland:

"October 13 [1912], Rev. P.C. Burgdorf was installed pastor of Jerusalem church, Belair road, Baltimore county. Rev. F. A. Hightman [founder of Epiphany ELC] read the scriptures, Rev. A. W. Ahl addressed the pastor in German. Rev. Ezra K. Bell delivered the charge to the congregation. The President of the [Maryland] Synod conducted the service and performed the official act of installation."

A learned man, Burgdorf served as editor of the monthly publication of the Lutheran Board of Foreign Missions, Der Missionsbote.

Burgdorf and his wife had two daughters, Esther (b. 1913, Baltimore, MD; d. 16 June 1996, Baltimore, MD), and Beatrice (b. 1916, Baltimore, MD).

Beatrice (Burgdorf) McCann attended Gettysburg College in the 1930s. Esther married Woodrow Harrison, Jr.

BURGDORF--On May 26, 1948, PAUL C., beloved husband of Hermance A. Rottmann Burgdorf. Remains reposing at his home, 4601 Belair road until Friday evening at 10 P.M. Further viewing in Jerusalem Lutheran Church on Saturday from 10 A.M. to 2:30 P.M. at which time services will be held. Interment in Jerusalem Cemetery.
