Bob was born Sept. 11, 1915, in Springfield, the son of Gustav C. and Caroline Schuricht Bretscher.
Preceding Bob in death was his wife of 53 years, Eleanor Murphy Bretscher; three brothers, Gustav J., Kurt T. and Carl E. Bretscher; and four sisters, Caroline B. Nelson, Helena Bretscher, Paula B. Bettinghaus and Else Bretscher.
Bob was a 1937 graduate of the University of Illinois and was employed by Sangamo Electric Co. from 1937 to 1964. From 1964 to retirement in 1990, he was employed by the Illinois Department of Transportation. Bob helped organize the local chapter of the Data Processing Management Association and served as its first president. He was a member of the Retired State Employees Association and the Jazz Society of Greater Springfield. Bob was a Navy veteran of World War II and proudly served as the engineering officer aboard an infantry landing craft (LCI 18) in Italy and North Africa.
Bob is survived by his son, William R. (Mary E. "Betsy") Bretscher; his daughter, Nancy Bretscher (Robert F.) Fulton; two grandsons; granddaughter and great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral: Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, the Rev. Monsignor Thomas P. Holinga, V.F., officiating. Burial: Calvary Cemetery.
