Elijah Fortune son of Peter and Elizabeth Fortune, was born Oct. 5, 1668, in
Coshocton County, Ohio, and died Wednesday, June 4, 1952, at the Yocum Hospital
in Chariton at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 29 days, following an illness
of 3 1/2 months. He came to Iowa with his parents at the age of 7 years. He
was United in marriage in 1887 to Eliza McLain, who preceded him in death. To
this union two children were born. On May 14,1896, he was united in marriage to
Cora Wendall. To this union ten children were born, five dying in infancy. He
was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Allie Bales. Surviving are his
wife, Cora, five children, Iva Hall and Ola Simpson, both of Gosport; Charles
Fortune of Burlington; Marion Fortune and Avis Goering, both of Grandview, Wash;
and one stepdaughter, Millie Knutson of Leroy Minn; also 26 grandchildren, 33
great-grandchildren, and one brother, Kellie Fortune of Grandview and a host of
other relatives and friends. He was a member of the Mason Nazarene Church and
remained a faithful follower of his Savior until he was called home. A kind and
loving husband and father, he will be greatly missed by his family, relatives
and friends. Services were held from the Melcher Methodist Church, Friday June
6, at 2 P.M., with Rev. Azel Smith of Pleasantville Methodist Church, assisted
by Rev. Althea Gugeler, officiating. Interment was in Gosport Cemetery.
