Rhoda Fleek Umstot, daughter of Solomon and Sarah A. Fleek, was born in Athens county, Ohio Dec. 25th, 1831, died in Crawford county, Ill., Jan. 15th, 1906, of infirmities of old age, aged 74 years and 20 days.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. T. J. Wheeler, Jr. at the Mt. Olive Baptist church. Text taken from Joh 14-1, the deceased own choosing after which the remains were taken to the Olive Branch cemetery for interment.

She was the youngest child of a family of ten children of which only one is now living, a sister, Mrs. Ann Seammshorn, of Pawnee Rock, Kan. Her parents moved from Licking county, Ohio, to Crawford county, Ill., in the fall of 1851.

She was united in marriage to Jacob Umstot, Sr. Jan 20th, 1852. To this union were born eight children, five sons and three daughters, namely: David O., who died Mar. 15th, 1875, James A., Jim, John F., Jacob J., Mrs. Sarah M. Evans, Mrs. Octavia L. C. Maddox and Mrs. Florence Burner all of whom with a companion survive her.

She lived on the old home place half mile east of Annapolis from her marriage until within a few months of her death, having resided there about 54 years, and being among the earliest settlers in this county.

A few months ago she went to spend a short time with her daughter, Octavia, and becoming ill she was unable to return to her home and departed this life on the above named date. She had never made a public profession of religion but left to her companion and children the evidence that all was well. She was a kind and loving mother, a dutiful wife and a good neighbor.

She leaves her aged companion, children and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. “Thou shalt be missed because thy seat is empty.” --Scott W. Goss
