Carl grew up and lived on the farm while he attended rural (Farr) school, Sunday School and confirmation at Trinity, and North Branch High School graduating in 1937. After high school he remained on the farm while working at the North Branch Creamery until he went to California in the winter of 1939.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1941. He served in the Fifth Army Texas 36th Infantry Division in the 133rd Field Artillery Battalion from 1941, where he served in the African-European Theatre until discharged in October 1945.
Carl was united in marriage to Phyllis Hammerstrom Oct. 13, 1945, at Trinity Lutheran Church, in North Branch. Six children were born to this union. They purchased the Standard Station in North Branch, which Carl started operating May 1, 1946. Lindy's Standard Service provided personalized automotive service to members of the then small North Branch community. After managing the station for 14 years until June 1, 1960, they then purchased and moved to a farm near Almelund, where they lived for 27 years and fulfilled Carl's dream of owning and managing his own farm. He built a quality Holstein dairy herd and in later years switched to beef animals. After retiring in 1987, they moved back to North Branch to keep busy with volunteering, which included work at the senior center, delivery of "Meals on Wheels" and chauffeuring seniors to medical appointments and relaxing. He was active in the VFW #6424, as well as a member of the Legion Post #85.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters and one stillborn son.
He leaves to mourn, his wife of 59 years, Phyllis; sons: Peter (Leslie) of California, Paul (Wendy) of North Branch, Perry (Barb) of North Branch, and Clark (Wendy) of South Carolina; one daughter, Carla (Neil) Norelius of Lindstrom; 12 grandchildren: Christopher Lindberg, Chad (Jenny) Lindberg, Alison and Nicholas Lindberg, Scott Peterson, Hanna, Carina, Andrea, and Greta Lindberg, Casey Lindberg, Jayme Forstrom and Heather (Preston) Wells and great-grandchild, Grace Wells.
He also leaves one brother, Fillmore (Dorothy) Lindberg, of Lindstrom, and one sister, Elphie Carlson, of Superior, Wis.; many nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
This loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and brother will be fondly remembered and greatly missed.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004, at Trinity Lutheran Church, in North Branch, with Rev. Loren Mellum officiating. Interment in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements by Grandstrand Funeral Home, in North Branch.
