JOHN DARBY
Born in the year of our Lord 1792. Feb 29.
And died August the 18th 1880
Aged
88 years, 8 months and 18 days
Born not the child of affluence and ease,
But of toil. He rose to influence and
prominence among his neighbors
by the vigor of his nature. His
character was actual and
upright. His manhood
was genuine and sturdy,
without pretensions,
and without
self righteousness.
He was earnest and sincere.
He was the steadfast friend to the poor
And works of quiet charity beautified
his life.
He is gone and we are left to linger
For yet a brief hour; before we
Join the vanished procession
of Mankind.
Gravesite Details
John Darby's original grave memorial was a 'box tomb', a rectangular box structure with 4 walls and an inscribed lid which was popular in the 19th century. The body was buried below ground and this box was placed directly on top of the grave.
