Obituary in the Xenia Gazette: paper date Monday, 28 Nov 1898:
Two Deaths ; The Grim Reaper Darkens Two Homes at Jamestown.
John Sturgeon died at his home in Jamestown last night. He was past 80 years of age and had been poorly for a year or more, his death being due to his advanced age. He passed away about 9 o'clock. He was a soldier during the war of the rebellion and formerly lived at Bowersville. His wife survives him.

Article in the Xenia Gazette, published Tuesday, 06 Dec 1898:

John Sturgeon, an old soldier, was buried here last Thursday. Exposure on the battlefield, in the defense of our country, and old age, was the cause of death. Thus one by one our soldiers leave us, but then,
"on fames eternal camping ground
His alien tent is spread
And glory guards with silent round
The bivouac of the dead."
