WHEELER - Funeral services for Pete Mayfield, a long-time resident of Wheeler County, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Wheeler Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Harold Purdue.

Mr. Mayfield, a retired farmer, died at 12:30 p.m. yesterday in Parkview Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in 1870 near Spanish Fort in Montague County, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Holt in 1893. They came to Wheeler County in 1910 and seettled in the Gageby Community. In 1942 they moved into Wheeler and in 1956 they moved to Sulphur, Okla. to make their home with a granddaughter, Mrs. Roy McCarley.

Mrs. Mayfield ined in 1960. Just previously, Mr. and Mrs. Mayfield had celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Mrs. McCarley of Sulphur; a grandson, L.W. Price of Lovington, N.M.; several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife; two daughters, Dora and Dolly and one son, William.

Interment will be in the Canadian Cemetery under the direction of Wright-Denson Funeral Home of Wheeler.

On 24 December 1893, Pete Mayfield married Mary Elizabeth Holt. They had 3 children, Dollie (Dollie had 2 children but died 18 August 1916), Dora who lived to be only 2 years old, and William C., who died in a river crossing accident at age 6.

They were called Uncle Pete and Aunt Mary during their latter years.

In 1943, the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and in 1953 the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the Methodist Church in Wheeler.

The couple lived in Wheeler until 1956 when they both became ill. They moved to Sulphur, Oklahoma, to live with their granddaughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Roy McCarley.

When Mary died in 1960, Uncle Pete moved back to Wheeler and lived there until his death. The couple were married almost 67 years.

Uncle Pete was a native of Texas and was born February 22, 1870, in Montague County, Texas. He lived in Hemphill County at Gageby from 1910 until retiring in 1943. He spent his active life farming.

Uncle Pete and Aunt Mary Mayfield were a lovable couple who remained active in the Methodist Church and were much loved by relatives and friends. Both are buried in Hemphill County in the Canadian Cemetery.
