Last rites will be Friday at 1 pm in the Foster & Good funeral home for Thomas "Tom" HOOVER, 76, who died Wednesday at 12:22 pm in the Miller nursing home where he had been a patient since June 6.
Mr Hoover resided at 117 1/2 East Seventh street.
The Rev Allen JUMP will officiate at the rites and burial will be in the IOOF cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
Mr Hoover was born June 25, 1893, at Toledo, O, the son of John and Jenny BUTLER HOOVER, and had spent almost all his life in this city. His grandfather, Chris HOOVER, was one of Rochester's earliest merchants, as furniture dealer and mortician.
In his younger days, Mr Hoover was an expert sportsman. He earned a statewide reputation as a shotgun marksman and won many honors in clay pigeon shooting. He also was an ardent duck hunter and fisherman.
Despite the accidental loss of a thumb on one hand and two fingers on the other, Mr Hoover was an accomplished golfer and for many years was the leading player on the Rochester country club's golf team that competed with neighboring cities.
An automobile enthusiast in the early days of the auto, he made numerous trips to Florida in the days when only gravel and dirt roads were available for travel. Mr Hoover gave freely to charity and distributed food to the poor at Christmas time, although always requesting that his name not be used in connection with the gifts.
Upon the death of his father, he succeeded to the ownership of the Hoover furniture store and mortuary, founded by his grandfather. Like many other businesses, it was forced to close during the Depression.
