Michael was born the son of John and Melody Haynes. Growing up, he wanted to be a police officer more than anything. He married Tawny and together they had two children, Taryn and Elias. He realized his dream when he was sworn in as a trooper with the Montana Highway Patrol in August 2006. He died while in the line of duty. He is survived by his wife, Tawny; his two young children, Taryn and Elias; and his parents, John and Melody Haynes of Kalispell. A memorial service was held at at Christian Center Assembly of God Church in Kalispell, with a procession of more than 1000 mourners following afterward to Glacier Memorial Gardens.

Trooper Mike Haynes succumbed to injuries sustained five days earlier when a car being operated by an intoxicated driver struck his patrol car head-on on US 93 near Kalispell.

The drunk driver was driving the wrong way on the highway when the collision occurred at approximately 2:40 am. The intoxicated driver was also killed in the collision.

Trooper Haynes had served with the Montana Highway Patrol for two and a half years. He is survived by his wife, two young children, and parents.
