Nuclear industry inventor born in Quebec
Roger L. Belanger, 73, died Tuesday,July 22, 2008, at the Berwick Hospital. A native of Rimouski, Quebec,Canada, he was the sixth child of 11 born to Cecile Yockell and Eleazar Belanger. He attended Sacred Heart School, Rimouski, Quebec. He received an electrical journeyman's certificate by age 18 and worked on radar installations and refineries throughout Canada. He was eventually hired by Bechtel Inc. and worked as an electrical field engineer in the United States. He was responsible for the startup of several nuclear plants in the United States including Pilgrim Station, Plymouth,Mass., and Susquehanna Nuclear, Berwick. In 1985, he patented a process for the decontamination of radioactive oily waste and founded as President and CEO,Plymouth Diversified Services, Manomet, Mass. He designed and constructed three decontamination units and serviced the nuclear industry in the eastern U.S. and Korea. He is mentioned in the 1993 Rolex Awards "Spirit of Enterprise" Burl Int. for his achievement.He semi-retired to his home in Berwick in 1997. He remained active doing part-time electrical work in the Berwick area, as well as welding and wood crafting.
Surviving are his wife, Angela S. Belanger, Berwick; three children: Joseph Belanger, Michael Belanger and Sherry Ouillet, all of Chezzetcook, Nova Scotia; three stepchildren:Cain Rimmer, Caleb Rimmer and Codie Rimmer, all of Berwick; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers:Abel and Jean Belanger, Rimouski, Quebec; sisters:Antoinette Montpetit, Kanata, Ontario; Marie Jeanne Belanger, Montreal, Quebec; and Madelaine Perrault,Rimouski, Quebec. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecile and Eleazar; and brothers: Charles and Femand; and sisters:Lucienne, Fernande, and Jeanette.Friends will be received Friday, July 25, from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Kelchner-McMichael Funeral Home Inc.,
Berwick. His funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Francis J. Tamburro of St. Mary's Church, Berwick, will officiate. Interment will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick.
