Lee Barnes
Lee Barnes, 90, a native of Smithland, died at his home at 4 p.m. Saturday Oct. 11, 2003.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Smithland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Grimes and the Rev. Mike Burk officiating.
Mr. Barnes was a member of Smithland United Methodist Church for over 70 years and served on numerous church committees.
He was a member and past master of Smithland Masonic Lodge No. 138 F&AM for 61 years, a member of the Smithland Chapter No. 417 Order of The Eastern Star for 60 years, and served in many stations of the chapter including Worthy Patron many times. He was past Deputy Grand Patron of District 18 and a Grand Representative of Illinois in Kentucky. He was a Kentucky Colonel and Duke of Paducah and was retired from S.K.W. Alloy of Calvert City as a mechanic.
Surviving are his wife, Bettie Lucas Barnes; one son, Larry G. Barnes of Smithland; two grandchildren, Maguel Sarantakos of Lexington and Damon Barnes of Smithland; three great-grandchildren; one niece and one nephew.
He is preceded in death by two brothers, O.G. "Sonny" Barnes and Odell "Frog" Barnes.
His parents were Delaney and Ina Driskill Barnes.
Friends may call between 5 and 8 p.m. Monday at Smith Funeral Chapel where Masonic rites will begin at 7.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy be in the form of contributions to the United Methodist Church of Smithland Cothron Cemetery Fund, 1096 Iuka Road, Smithland, KY 42081 or Lourdes Hospice, 1530 Lone Oak Road, Paducah, KY 42001.

BARNES
William Lee Barnes was born May 7,1913 at Ledbetter, Ky. in Livingston Co. He is the son of the late Delaney Barnes and Ida Driskill Barnes. His brothers, all deceased were Orval (Sunny), Odell(Frog) and an infant brother.
His grandparents were Bennett W. Barnes and Sarah Jane Terry Barnes; and Thomas Driskill and Emma Sears Driskill.* Name was Emma Powell, not Sears*
Lee attended Smithland grade school and graduated from Livingston County High School in 1931. He attended one semester at Murray Stat College. He served in the CCC Camp in Hartford, Ky. in 1933. He then worked for N.E. Stone Construction Company in building and paving highways in both Livingston and McCracken Couinties. He worked as a mechanic in Barnes Garage in Smithland, operated by his brother Odell(Frog). He later worked on construction for the TVA in building of Kentucky Dam and Shawnee Steam Plant. Later, he owned and operated a bull dozer and a drag line with which he did work for farmers in digging ponds and waterways and also in clearing and cleaning of farm land.
He retired from Airco Alloys at Calvert City, Ky. in 1978, where he had worked the past 16 years as a mechanic on heavy equipment.
Lee is a member of Smithland United Methodist Church, where he has served on various committies during the years.
He is a Mason and a member of Smithland lodge #138 F & AM and a Past Master of the lodge. He is a member of Smithland Chapter #417 Order of Eastern Star, where he served as Worthy Patron several years and has filled other offices in the Chapter. He served as Deputy Grand Patron of District 18, and also was a Grand Representative of Illinois in Kentucky, O.E.S.
Lee married Bettie Lucus May 22, 1937. Bettie was born Aug 20, 1916 on Haddox Ferry Road in Livingston Co Ky. She is the daughter of Roy Dickson(Dick) Lucus and Nora Ramage Lucus, both deceased. She had one sister, Glada, who died at age two years. Two brothers Hervy and Marvin (Preach) Lucus are deceased. A brother William G. (Bill) Lucus lives near Birdsville, Ky. where he owns a farm.
Her grandparents were William Hervy Lucus and Elizabeth (Bettie) Cooper Lucus; Adolphus Ramage and Louisa Timmons Ramage. *Note-Rudolphus Ramage*
Bettie attended school at Leeper, a one room school, located on what is called the Cut-Off Road, and is now known as No. 937. She graduated from Livingston County High School in the class of 1935. After her marriage to Lee, they owned and operated a grocery store, known as Lucus Store, which her father had owned and operated for many years previously. After they closed the store in 1961, Bettie enrolled at Paducah Beauty School, where she recieved her liscence as a beautitation. She owned and operated her own beauty shop until she retired in 1987. They live on a farm four miles south of Smithland, on highway 453, where she lived since the age of seven.
They are the parents of one son, Larry Gene Barnes, born Sept 30,1940. Larry attended Smithland Grade School, graduated from Livingston Central High School in the class of 1958. He attended Murray State College and is employed at Air Products at Calvert City, Ky. as a lab technician, where he has worked since college.
He has two children, a daughter, Shandra Maquel Barnes, age 18, who is a student at the University of Kentucky; a son, Damon Bret Barnes, age 16, a student at Livingston Central High School.
Larry lives in a home he built, located on the same farm where he was born and reared.
Bettie and Lee celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary May 23,1987 with a reception in the Fellowship Room at Smithland United Methodist Church.
