Wanda was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Wayne County, Ill., to Orpha Meeks and was raised by her grandparents, Robert and Maggie Odell. She committed her life to Christ at age 11 and was baptized a year later in the Old Mill Pond on Palm Sunday. She joined Burnt Prairie Baptist Church, where she was a member until moving to Fairfield, Ill.
At age 17, she went to work in a defense factory. On March 17, 1946, her sweetheart, Billy K. Mayberry, returned from World War II. They were married on April 11, 1946. They soon moved to Peoria, Ill., where Bill worked for Caterpillar and Wanda worked for Bemis Bag. The couple later moved to Lawn Ridge and resided there for 45 years.
Wanda was a charter member of Rome Baptist Church, where she remained faithful until her death.
Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Bill.
She is survived by a daughter, Jacalyn (Ben) Taylor of Chillicothe, Ill.; two sons, James (Sandra) Mayberry of Dunlap, Ill., and the Rev. Dr. Donald (Sherry) Mayberry of Douglass, Kan.; five grandchildren, John (Melissa) Taylor of Overland Park, Kan., Adam Mayberry of Chicago, Ill., Ryan Mayberry of Bloomington, Ill., Rachel Mayberry of Atlanta, Ga., and Bethany (Allen) Dawson of Southeast Asia; one foster granddaughter, Darlene (Dan) Mercer of LaSalle, Ill.; one soon-to-be-born great-grandchild; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; two foster great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Bessie Mayberry of Pekin, Ill.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. at Rome Baptist Church, with visitation today, Sept. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery.
