He was born April 19, 1961, to Arnold and Joyce (Busby) Heinonen in Mineral Wells, Texas. When he was 6, he and his family moved to Shoreview, where he grew up and attended public school. As a young man, he started driving trucks over the road and also worked construction for many years. He went on to study accounting at Brown Institute, and he also studied to become an asbestos removal specialist at the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.
In 1992 he suffered a major cerebral hemorrhage; he lost the sight in one eye and suffered major paralysis on his right side. Doctors told him he would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, but his determination and focused effort helped him to regain nearly full usage of his physical ability. He was an excellent cook who will long be remembered for his delicious lasagna.
