ATHENS— Visitation for Julia Lee Twomey, 90, Mesquite, formerly of Athens will be 10:45 to 11:45 Friday at Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 Noon in Oaklawn Memorial Park with Rev. Jack Matkin officiating.Mrs. Twomey died May 4, 2009 in Mesquite.She was born October 23, 1918 in Ripley, Mississippi. Julia spent her early years in Northern Mississippi where she attended high school. Following graduation she traveled to Memphis to pursue her career. It was there that she met the love of her life, the person that would take her on a 66 year journey of love, trials, joy and hardships. She married "Red" Twomey November 9, 1943 during World War II. Her career then became the wife of a U.S. Marine. Their duty stations took them throughout the United States. During this time "Judy" and "Red" had two children, Donna and Terry. In addition to her children, she was caregiver to her mother and mother-in-law.After retirement Judy and Red moved to Athens where together they built their new home. It was here where she pursued her hobbies of china painting, gardening and traveling. Together they attended Marine reunions renewing friendships with many friends they made in their 30 years of service.Julia was a member of First United Methodist Church, Disabled American Veterans Auxillary and Cedar Creek Porcelain Art Club.Judy always had a smile and never said a bad word about anyone. She was like a magnet as others were always drawn to her.She was preceded in death by her parents James Escar and Avie Hazel Gibson Kent; brother Giles Kent, sister Mary Northern.Survivors include her husband L.T. Twomey, son Terry Twomey and wife Linda, Mansfield; daughter Donna Adams and husband Harry, Mesquite; sister Hazel New, Long Beach, Ca., grandchildren Mark Kitts, Todd Kitts and wife Denise; great grandchildren Katie, Rylee and Sammie Kitts.If desired, you may leave a message of condolence for the family or sign the guest register at www.carrolllehr.com.
