Thomas Jefferson Anderson was first a teacher and then a lawyer. He studied law and was admitted to practice in 1860. He married Mary Ann Rousseau at Elm Grove, Iowa, Feb. 26, 1862.
Thomas Jefferson Anderson served in the Civil War Aug. 9, 1862 to Dec. 2, 1864. He was a First Lieutenant in Company A, 40th Iowa Infantry when he enlisted and was a Captain when he was released. In 1890, serving as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Utah, he ruled that in Mormon marriages, the children of the first wife were considered to be legitimate (Mormon Test Oath Cases). He and his wife Mary Ann were parents of 4 children: Evelyn Emma "Eva" Anderson Strait, Sarah Jane "Jennie" Anderson, James Rousseau Anderson, and Gertrude "Gertie" Anderson. He was a widower in 1882. He married a second time in 1889 to Julia A. Slocum, then divorced a few years later. He lived to age 73 and was buried in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
