E.W. "Bill" Abernathy, 88, of Greenbrier died May 6, 2009, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born May 5, 1921, at Greenbrier, son of Marvin and Opal Cameron Abernathy.
Bill retired as an inspection surveyor with Missouri State Highway Department.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany and northern Europe.
He was a 1941 graduate of Zalma High School and a member of the 1940 State Championship Basketball Team. This team was the only state championship team in Zalma's school history.
Bill and Rosalie McCullough were united in marriage Dec. 5, 1953. She preceded him in death April 9, 2007.
Survivors include one son, Lannie (Kimberly) Abernathy of Memphis, TN; one brother, James Abernathy of Florissant, MO; and one grandson of Memphis, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be today at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance, MO. The funeral will be Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jimmy Corbin officiating. Burial will be in Morgan Memorial Park in Advance, with full military rites provided.
