Mother Colleen Kimbro

(Died May 4, 2009)

Saluted over many years as one of the true, great educators of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, Mother Colleen Kimbro died peacefully Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at the Franciscan Sisters' Carceri of the Northwoods in Duluth, Minnesota, where she had lived for the past 32 years.
Mother Colleen, one of the founding members of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist Community, was also foundress of the Sacramental Education Center near Cloquet, Minnesota. She was known throughout the Cloquet-Duluth area for her dedication to education, having been the principal of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School and then Queen of Peace School, Cloquet, from 1977 to 2001. During her years in educational administration, she was selected for the Bush Principals' Leadership Program from the University of Minnesota, Carlson School of Management. She was chosen as 1999 Principal of the Year of the Duluth Diocese Catholic Schools. She was a member of Port Area Catholic Education, Minnesota Non-public School Accrediting Association and the National Catholic Education Association. Prior to her years in Minnesota, Mother Colleen held leadership and teaching positions in schools in Vancouver, BC; Salem, Oregon; Blackfoot, Idaho; Spokane, Washington; and Mondovi, La Crosse, Ashland, Eau Claire, St. Joseph Ridge and Colby, Wisconsin. As a principal, she encouraged teachers to approach each child individually, taking the students "where they are and as they are" as she was often quoted, and to adapt teaching methods to fit each child. She introduced innovative programs based on individualized education in Oregon and Vancouver, as well as in Cloquet. She was called upon frequently by local, regional and diocesan educators for consultation in education.

Mother Colleen was named Margaret Ellen at her birth in 1925 in Marmarth, North Dakota, where she lived until the family moved to Bozeman, Montana, during her junior year in high school. From 1943 to 1946 she was employed by Consolidated Freightways in Bozeman as an office manager. In 1946 she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, La Crosse, Wisconsin, and pronounced perpetual vows of chastity, poverty and obedience in 1955. In 1973 she became a founding member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist.

Known for her strong faith-filled convictions and her patriotic spirit, Mother Colleen attributed these qualities to her Irish mother, Margaret Kimbro, who, at a very young age, left Wisconsin to homestead a farm in North Dakota by herself. Mother Colleen's father, Albert Kimbro, was the County Commissioner in Marmarth.

Mother Colleen received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education from Viterbo College in 1957, a Master of Education in Administration degree from University of Portland in 1964, and a Leadership Certificate from the Bush Leadership Program, Minneapolis, in 1993.

Mother Colleen is survived by her sister Carrie Narum of Fort Collins, Colorado; her Franciscan Community in thirteen Centers in the U.S., Italy, the Holy Land and Jamaica, West Indies, and several nieces and nephews. Her niece, Sister Francine Cardew of Bridal Veil, Oregon, is a member of the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist. Mother Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Mary Barrett and Ruth Anderson, her brothers Albert, Jr., Thomas and James, eleven Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist and one Franciscan Brother of the Eucharist.
