John Rea, M. D. was born February 10, 1819, in Rockbridge Co., VA, the son of David and Elizabeth (Adams) Rea, both natives of Virginia. His father moved the family to Fayette Co., IN in the fall of 1833, then in 1843, they moved to Cass Co., IN where David died in 1855 and Elizabeth dying, in the spring, of the same year.
John was raised on a farm and received a limited education in the district school. However, he improved his leisure moments, and at the age of nineteen was qualified to teach. He taught for several years, and at the same time keeping up his studies. In March of 1844, he took charge of the New Castle school, and the following fall began the study of medicine with Dr. Woodward, remaining with him for three years, when he was examined before the Thirteenth District Medical Society and was granted a license to practice. He started his practice at Middletown, Henry Co., IN in May of 1847, he remained there until November of the same year, when he went to Lewisville, Henry Co., IN and remained there till 1855, then he moved to New Castle, Henry Co., IN. John practiced medicine for eight years, while he attended lectures at the Ohio Medical College, in Cincinnati, OH, and graduated in 1855. He served as School Trustee in Henry County for twenty-four years. Both, he and his wife were members of the Baptist Church.
John had an enviable reputation with his brother physicians, whose diagnosis of disease was regarded with much favor. As a consequence, he was often called on as counsel, especially of younger physicians, by whom he was held in high esteem.
In 1851, John married Mary E. Remby, a native of Salem, Essex Co., MA, born April 5, 1829, and a daughter of George Remby. Mary was a teacher in the Lewisville Schools before her marriage. They had a family of eleven children [seven known]: George N., Elizabeth "Lizzie", Charles Loring, Olive "Ollie", Francis, John Edgar and Mary. George was a graduate of the Ohio Medical College, and was associated in business with his father. Charles graduated in March of 1884, at the same college, and located in Rogersville, Henry Co., IN.
