Velma Eggers was born on March 30, 1910 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Wife of Sam Cross, they were married May 5, 1934 in Canton, South Dakota. Mother of Judy Luing and Lon Cross. Mother-in-law of Gary Luing. Grandmother to seven grandchildren who missed knowing you: Christine Danielski, Michael Luing, Peter Luing, Sherilyn Mohler, Andrew Luing, Kirstin Cross and Damon Cross. And now 13 great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren. Daughter of Peter and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Eggers. Sister of Harold (Leora) Eggers, Walter (Daisy) Eggers, Leona (Harvey) Horn, and Ray Eggers. Sister-in-law to Neva (Kenneth) Blood, Ione (Bill) Allan, Georgia (Joe) Wolden, Warren (Arley) Cross, and Judy (Ernie) Johnson. Velma's mother died on February 22 (the same date as her own death) in 1911, when she was one year old. At that time, she and her sister and brothers were sent to Gladbrook, Iowa, to be raised by their maternal grandparents Grandpa and Grandma Theede for seven years. In 1918, the children returned to Sioux Falls to live with their father, and that's where she attended school graduating from Washington High. She met and married Sam Cross, and they lived in Sioux Falls for the rest of her life. Velma enjoyed her summers at their cabin at Lake Madison and family get-togethers at Aunt Neva's nearby cabin on the lake. All year long, she and her sisters-in-law particpated in a sewing and arts 'n crafts group they simply called "Club." And she enjoyed collecting a scrapbook of her favorite poems. We'll always remember your laughter, Mom.
"I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree."
