Sam Cross was born on March 6, 1907 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Husband of Velma (Eggers) Cross, they were married on May 5, 1934 in Canton, South Dakota. Father of a son, Lon Cross, and a daughter, Judy (Cross) Luing. Father-in-law to Gary Luing. Grandpa Sam to seven grandchildren: Christine Danielski, Michael Luing, Peter Luing, Sherilyn Mohler, Andrew Luing, Kirstin Cross and Damon Cross. And now 13 great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren you never had the chance to know. Son of Julia and George Cross of Sioux Falls. Sam was named after his maternal grandfather, Samuel Helson, and his paternal grandfather, William Cross. But as a kid he earned the nickname "Spud" because of his love for potatoes. Brother to Neva (Kenneth) Blood, Ione (Bill) Allan, Georgia (Joe) Wolden, Warren (Arley) Cross, and Judy (Ernie) Johnson. Brother-in-law to Leona (Harvey) Horn, Walter (Daisy) Eggers, Ray Eggers, Harold (Leora) Eggers. Sam graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls. In 1935, he and his sister, Judy, opened Cross Grocery on the corner of Van Eps Avenue and 10th Street. Sam bought out her interest in 1939 when she married and he continued to run the store for several years. A 33 degree Free Mason, he was a member of the Blue Lodge and the El Riad Shrine. After Velma died in 1959, Sam spent his summers at his cabin at Lake Madison, commuting to his job at Jordan Millwork in Sioux Falls until his retirement. He enjoyed family get-togethers at Neva's cabin that was just down the road. Sam was a snowbird who wintered at his place in Arizona where his sisters and brothers-in-law, Neva, Georgia and Joe, and Judy and Ernie also spent winters.
