Thanks to contributor Bruce Lambert (51396316 ) great-great grandson of John Whipple Day, , for the transcribed copy of his obituary.
After a sickness of only three weeks, John W. Day passed from this life on Tuesday evening. The news of his death [paper fold] …many friends and acquaintances, many of whom had heard that he was sick, but supposed he was getting better. His sickness was what is known as the old-fashioned or walking typhoid fever. The direct cause of his death was perforation of the bowels.
Mr Day was a native of Danielson, being the son of Thomas M. and Mary A. Day. He was born April 5, 1857, and during his early life attended the public schools, continuing through the High School, and graduating with the class of 1876. He learned the trade of a carpenter, which his father had so successfully carried on, and worked at this trade several years. He won many friends as clerk in Ely's dry goods store, also in the Quinebang Store and Boston Dry Goods store. On account of his health, he again took up his trade, and for the past few years has been in the Nichols wood working shop.
Mr Day had a fine tenor voice and has been identified with Wood's Male Quartet since it's organization, over 26 years ago. He has also been in the choir of the Congregational Church for 31 years. He will be much missed in both of these organizations. He was a member of Moriah Lodge, No. 15, F. & A. M., and other fraternal orders.
Jan. 3, 1884, he married Emma L. Underwood and they have been blessed with two children: Albert T., born Jan. 28, 1886, and John U., Born Dec. 19, 1890. His life was a cheerful and helpful one, and his devotion to his wife and sons, and kindness to everybody will long linger as a fragrant memory in the home which his presence brightened and which death has now darkened. Besides the above, he leaves to mourn his loss, his mother, Mary A. Day, a brother, Charles, and sister, Stella, (Mrs Stephen Prentice), all of whom have the sincere sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
Funeral services will be held in the Congregational Church, Friday, July 12, at 1 o'clock. Rev. C. H. Barber, pastor of the Congregational Church, and Rev. R. S. Cushman of the Methodist church will officiate. A short prayer service will be held at the house, at 12.30. Burial will be at Westfield cemetery and will be Masonic.
