Sarah was the daughter of Mary and Jacob Close. In the early to mid 1850s, her family moved to Adair County, Missouri. A near neighbor in Iowa, Jesse Judd, either accompanied them or soon followed. Sarah subsequently married Jesse on 3 May 1857 and they began a family which totaled 13 children. The Judd and Close families returned to Des Moines County, Iowa, at some point after the 1860 census and before June 1864.

Of the 13 children born to Sarah and Jesse, six where known to die young and are commemorated on a marker in the Prairie Grove Cemetery. Of those six, the first child (George), was born and died while the family lived in Missouri. The second child (Benjamin), was born in Missouri and likely died there before the family returned to Iowa. The other children on the marker are William, Rebecca, John and Ida. The remaining seven children were: James, Matilda, David, Mary, Susannah, Cissie and Clara.

NOTE: The marker of Sarah does not have a death date inscribed. She died on some date after the June 1900 census, and she was assuredly buried here with her husband and little children.
