Henry Parker
Passed Away at Ripe Age - Henry Parker, probably the oldest man in St. Clair County, passed away at his home in this city Tuesday morning at 1:50 after being bedridden for the past four years. Mr. Parker's name is linked with the early days of the County. He was born in Warren County, New York, November 4, 1828, and came to Michigan with his mother in 1830 [Dec 1832], his father [Henry Parker Sr] having died a year before at the old home in New York State *[died abt 1831 daughter born 1832]. The mother and children settled in Pine River district [St. Clair] and Mrs. (Minerva) Parker was later married to *David [John Mead] Oakes and the family resided on the Oakes farm for many years. Mr. Parker was married on October 8, 1857, to Rosanna Haynes [Haines] and the newly married couple commenced farming. Mr. Parker enlisted in the 22nd Michigan infantry in 1864 and was later transferred to the 27th Michigan. He remained in the Army until the muster out and returned to his home in St. Clair County. Mr. Parker remained on the farm until about thirty years ago when they took up residence in St Clair. Mr. Parker is prominently mentioned in the History of St. Clair County which was compiled by Mrs. B. F. Crampton and published sometime ago. He lived through the period of transformation from tall and stately pines to green and fertile fields. From the day of Indian trails to broad state trunk lines. He endured the hardship and privations of the pioneer and enjoyed the luxuriant atmosphere of these modern days - he and the widow he leaves behind who entered on her 88th year. Besides the widow he leaves one son, Fred, whose home is at Harrison, Clare County, but who has been in this city the past two months. The funeral was held from the home on Sixth street Thursday afternoon with members of the G.A.R. of Port Huron and St. Clair in attendance. The services were conducted by Rev. E. F. Dunlavy, pastor of the M. E. Church.
