Mr. James Madison Daniel was born March 29, 1842, being 83 years, 4 months and 16 days old at this time. He died Monday, July 13, at the home of Mrs. P.F. Duerr, a niece, of Ashland, Nebraska.
In the fall of 1860 he joined the Seventeenth Indiana, J.T. Wilder's famous mounted brigade and served four years, 3 months, in the Civil War.
Mr. Daniel was one of the government scouts and guides, west of the Missouri River in the days before the Union Pacific railroad was built.
He was also with Ben Holliday's Overland Stage line which carried freight between Atchison, Kans., to Sacramento, California. In 1867 Mr. Daniel left the Overland Stage company and joined the fight against the Indians. He was in the Battle of Wounded Knee.
He was made colonel in Sioux uprising in 1890.
He was married in 1872 to Belle White. From this union seven daughters wer born: Mrs. F.S. Auge, Mrs. George Gould, Mrs. F.A. Dilts, Mrs. A.B. Dill, Mrs. Robert Waters, Mrs. Thomas Turner, Mrs. John Lemmel.
As an old timer, who has gone through more than one man's share of pioneering, Mr. Daniel could tell many interesting and truthful stories that seem almost incredible to the generation of today. He has often said he would still like to see the life over again, with all its dangers and hardships. During his younger years, Mr. Daniel opened many trails that are now well trodden roads.
The younger cowpunchers today of driving a bunch of cattle a few hundred miles to a railroad for market. Mr. Daniel used to drive cattle from Indiana to the Gulf of Mexico.
He leaves a sister, Mrs. Eliza Leddy and two nephews, John and Will Leddy and a niece, Mrs. Philip Duerr of Ashland.
