Herbert "Herb" Milby Phillips was born on May 10, 1925 to Oscar Herbert "Doc" Phillips and Minnie Milby Phillips. When Minnie passed away in 1936, Herbert and his sister, Marguerite, went to live with Minnie's family and grew up on the Milby homestead in Edna, Texas. Herbert would tell many stories of being raised on the Milby place and ranching with his Uncle's Bennie and Oran. Like his favorite Uncle's before him, Herbert never married, although he had his fair share of lady friends, as he was a very handsome fellow. Herbert lived in Edna all his life, and for the most part, worked as a painter. Herbert served as a Corporal in the US Marine Corps during World War II. He was a member of the 6th Defense Battalion which had spent 18 months on Midway Island before moving onto the Island of Tinian. His hut was right next to the runway and he actually witnessed the Enola Gay take off with her payload and return empty.

Herb was a life-long avid hunter and fisherman and loved to tell many stories about his adventures. He was also renowned for his vegetable garden, and more specifically, his home-grown tomatoes with articles and pictures appearing in the local paper. For me, my personal favorite was his rose gardens. Man could he grow beautiful roses! Per his request, he is buried beside Uncle Oran and Uncle Bennie.

Note: Herb was my Uncle.
