U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Princeton College in 1808, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1809 and proceeded to practice law in Easton, Maryland. Entering politics, he was a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates (1818-20). In 1823, he was elected as a Crawford Republican to the Eighteenth Congress, serving until 1825. After his term, he continued the practice of law until his death.
