Fred Schmidt, 59, of Keswick, died from complications of heart failure on Friday, May 8, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer. Visitation will begin Tuesday morning at 10:00 am and continue until the time of the service at 1:00 pm. Burial will be at the Sorden Cemetery near Webster. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.
Fred Mark Schmidt was born on December 31, 1949 in Sigourney, Iowa the son of R. Carl and Margaret Smith Schmidt. He was a 1968 graduate of Tri-County High School. Fred attended Indian Hill Community College where he completed the auto mechanic program. He married Diane VanDee in 1978, they were later divorced. Fred lived his entire life in his rural Keswick home where he farmed for many years. The most important aspect of Fred's life was his two sons, Dustin and Coldt. Fred enjoyed riding his Harley, taking care of his garden, canning and the simple joys in life that only a farmer would understand.

His legacy will be honored by his son Coldt (Annie Bach) Schmidt of West Des Moines; two sisters: Carla (Don) Burdock of Keswick, Deborah (Robert) Herdlicka of Cedar Rapids; two brothers: Loren (Mary) Schmidt of Keswick, Richard C. Schmidt II of South English. He also leaves behind three grandchildren; Kearstan, Makenna and Davian.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, his son Dustin Walker Schmidt and a nephew Noah Schmidt.
