Sarah A. Bown owned a plot in Union Dale Cemetery but we have a family note and cemetery confirmation that she was buried in Homewood Cemetery and so I am hoping that other family members are buried here. I am looking for Baines and Bown family members.

Sarah Ann Lea was born on Aug 8, 1815 (using her death register in Pittsburgh, yy mm dd subtracted from date of death). We believe that she may have been the Sarah Ann Lea born to Richard and Leah Lea of Westport near Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England. Richard was a baker. A copy of this baptismal record survives, baptism was 24 Sep 1815 in Westport. Family records give her date of birth as 29 April, 1815 and family thought she was from near Bath, which is not that far away. Perhaps she and David left from Bath for US.

She married David Bown at the age of 18 (according to family story, however documents would give her age as 20) on February the 12th, 1835 and a copy of the wedding certificate survives. Her people thought that this was not a wise step (family history, but comment not explained). She and her husband came to America and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, two years later. They had eight children mentioned under her husband's name, perhaps a ninth child, Lydia, who died young.

Sarah assisted her husband at their bakery (her father was a baker as well) until David died on April 5, 1856. She sold Andrew Carnegie pies at the lunch counter when he only had enough money to buy one pie. She carried on the business for nine years and raised her children and four granddaughters, the children of her son, Joseph Bown, widower of Eliza Crawford Bown. She joined the Church of Christ in Hazelwood when King Pendleton was minister.

Since 1865, she made her home among her children and grandchildren. Sarah died at the age of 89 on Monday, November 28, 1904, at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Berry. Her husband, three children, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren preceded her in death. Five children, 33 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren survived her. A simple service in her memory was held in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rachael Baines, by Rev. E. W. Thornton assisted by George W. Watson. She was buried in Homewood Cemetery on Wednesday, November 30, 1904.

Her burial was in Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, but there is no stone erected.

NOTE REGARDING GRAVE:

The general problem they reported is:
Cemetery office confirmed that this burial is unmarked though Sarah rests here.

Thanks to Todd Walker Find-A-Grave member, of Pittsburgh for finding this information and sending me the photograph.
